Cleaning your Air Filter

Hey guys, I have a BOmz Racing Short Ram intake with 4' filter. I was wondering how to clean the filter, it seems very dirty with sand particles falling off it when i blow at it. it has a red material with some sort of black mesh/fish net around it. DO i just throw it in the dishwasher? j/k.
spray it with a hose or what?
