Question ignition/shifter stuck

After stopping in a store, I came out to my Intrigue and couldn't get the key to turn to start the car. I checked to be sure the steering wheel was in correct position and noticed it would not lock. The shifter is also stuck.
Has anyone had this problem and do you know how to fix it?

Thanks!

Re: ignition/shifter stuck

I am having the exact same problem, were you able to figure out the problem. I think it may be the nuetral/park safety switch. The dealership wants about $50 for the part so it may end up being an expensive test.

Re: ignition/shifter stuck

Just an update, it was not the safety switch but rather the ignition cylinder. It runs with rekeying charge around $200 from the dealership.

It is a long process to change it. Once you finally get everyting out and apart, the new one can be inserted, but be sure to check the old one as ther is a small spring that will be needed in the assembly of the two pieces (the igintion comes partially assembled) being replaced. The actual part comes with a few extra pieces (springs and pins) that are not needed.

Important: After installing the new ignition you have to reprogram the computer to use the new ignition. As far as I remeber you turn the key to the on position for 10 minutes then attempt to start - then turn off. Repeat this procedure three times and the car should start on the third try.

It is not the easist process, but anyone that is relatively handy with cars should be able to get it done. Hope this helps someone.
