Alternator (I think)

Got a 1996 Aurora..Wierd problem. Every time I start it, it squeaks. It sounds like it's coming from the Alternator or one of the belt tensioners. Once the car warms up to full operating temp, the squeak goes away.

1. Is it most likely the alternator, or the tensioner?

2. Is it possible to change the alternator yourself? I've looked, and have done most of the repair work on my previous vehicles, but the alternator looks jammed in there such that it'd take a heck of a lot of tools to pull it, or maybe even putting it up on a hoist (or over a pit).

Thanks for the suggestions.

Matt

Re: Alternator (I think)

Matt,

I would change the tensioner first as they can go bad and will squeak when they start. When you change it put a new belt on as well since it may need it anyway. Finally, you can change the alternator with a few hand tools and a few minutes time it isn't a hard job.
