96 Camry - Bad O2 Sensor
I have a 1996 Camry LE 4 cyl with the Check Engine light on. The code indicates a bad O2 sensor. How can I tell which sensor is bad? Upstream or downstream of the catalytic converter? Each one costs about $150 and they are not the same part number.

Re: 96 Camry - Bad O2 Sensor
What is the code? Autozone will read the codes for you for free if you are not sure. Retrieve the code and then go here:

Code is P0420
The code displayed is P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). I'm assuming it is an O2 sensor that is bad. Could it be a bad catalytic converter?

Re: 96 Camry - Bad O2 Sensor
If it's the HO2 sensor, then it is the one after the Cat. Converter. With a hand-held tester, you can test the HO2 sensor and make sure it's the problem before you replace it.

Quote:
90% of the time this code represents a defective catalytic converter. The rear O2 sensor seems to be doing it's job of reading the exhaust gasses that have passed through the converter, and reporting to the computer that they are not correct. There is a remote possibility that the rear O2 sensor is faulty, so do the test that Brian has recommended. I think you will find that the sensor tests out OK and that the converter has to be replaced. Good luck. Mike |
