Jumpy Speedo

Has been happening since i got the car, didn't bother me then, but now it is aggraviating!!! From 0-30, the speedo is really jumpy, can be hard to tell how fast your going by looking at the damn thing. Once in higher speeds like 50 and above, it straightens itself out. Doesn't this happen to any of you? Can you adjust the speedo cable from the tranny? Btw, is my speedo electric? 87 iroc, 305 tpi, 700r4, yeah baby!!!

happens to me too but the way to fix it is to go 50. sorry i cant help but it might not be a problem, they all might do it. thats kinda weird but my tach does it too.

My tach is a little jumpy, like it jumps back and forth increments of about 20rpms, which i would assume be normal, but they way the speedo jumps is redicilous!! Say if I'm cruising at 30mph, it will be jumping from 20-30 back and forth motion, it seems as if the cable is loose or something like that, it on crack!!!

if you dissconnect the battery with the car on, does the tach jump more?

My dads car also does this, he took it to the shop, they said they fixed it, but it never quit doing it... it is just a think that u have to live with mostlikely.

Alright I was checking third gen and I came up with this answer for you guys, hope it helps out. The speedometer cable most likely needs to lubricated. Most repair and speed shops can do this relatively cheaply. You might also want to check where the cable goes into the tranny. Over time, the gears can slide apart and not mesh properly.

I'm on my second 3rd gen, both twitch under 10 mph, the cable lube is about the only resolve. I think the tach is a seperate issue tho.

Jumpy speedo readings are the result of a dry drive cable. The cable just needs lube. Unattach it from the back of the speedo and let a few drops of oil slide down the cable. Reconnect the speedo cable. I know this is easier said than done, but it does work and costs nothing.
