oil filter adapter problem

Ive got a '91 chevy p/u with a '92 GM crate 350...and ive run into a problem...this has never happen to me before or anyone i know...The oil filter adapter(the piece that the oil filter treads onto to hold up the filter) has cracked in two...i got another one from a junkyard cause a new one at the dealer is 113.00 ....i put this one on and it was all good for a day then this moring on the way to work the piece of crap broke again....and i had to call my wife and bring the other truck ....but anyways i need to know whats wrong with it befor I buy another one and just brake it again...thx

is the adapter case itself broken or is it just one of the lines? if the whole case is broken i would go with the $113. one from the dealer, but i would also check the local parts stores first, napa, car quest, motor supply or who ever you have local. they may stock it, they have been stocking the lines for those because of the amount of problems there are with the lines, as far as why it broke you got me there is nothing there that would break it unless you front shaft coming from transfere case has a bad u joint, thats the only thing close to that that moves. good luck, and hope you didn't run it out of oil before you realized it was broken.

as soon as i saw my oil pressure drop i pulled over...but its the thing that holds up the filter ..my buddy thinks maybe its turn the wrong way...any more ideas

Do you have 2 or 4 wheel drive?

its a 2wd half ton short bed, with standard cab.

A couple of things it could be-- the oil pump itself has a pressure relief valve in it -if this sticks it can blow the filter and crack the housing-usually this happens when you start up cold, not driving down the road--have you noticed any high oil pressures? Do you have the oil cooler with lines coming out of the adapter or just the filter adapter with plugs, and is your filter vertical or is it horizontal--large filter-1 quart or small half quart filter? There are pressure relief fittings in the filter housing as well. The jukyard one could have had a hairline crack from being wrecked-- Did it crack in the same place as the first one? You could go with the cheaper old style 350 adapter --which mounts the filter vertical-- if you don't have an oil cooler.

I Have Just Noticed Normal Oil Pressure And No There Are No Oil Lines Coming Out Ofthe Adapter Also It Is Mounted Vertical(its A "ph5" I Think Its A Quart) And Yes It Cracked In The Same Place As The Old One.

OK a couple more question--did you install the crate 350 yourself--did you reuse the old adapter or did the crate motor come with a new one? Is it possible that you tightened it too much? the chevy book calls for 80 inch-lbs torque. $113 is awful high for that tiny piece of aluminium.

yes my bubby and i installed the 350...and yes i had to reuse the adaptor...i also called another dealer and they said they could get me one for 35 bucks..

i could have tightened it too much...cause i did not use a torque wrench i just tighten it ...

I would get the $35 one and install it with a torque wrench and see what happens--Good luck!!

oh yeah ..one more ? we did this swap awhile ago and there has been no problem..and just one day its breaks...one thing is when it did break, it was on the longest trip the new engine has been on since we swap it....also on the 80inch-pounds is that 80x.083 to convert to foot-pounds..???
