92 Jetta will not start

I have got a 92 gas Jetta with auto trans with less than 100k km on it(was parked for a few years). In cold and or damp weather it refuses to start. It turns over but fails to catch. Replaced ignition coil recently but that changed nothing. If the car is plugged in for a couple of hours before attempting to start it is ok.

It also runs rough and comes close to stalling whenever I slow to stop and in park. The idle rpm hovers between 2000 and near zero.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Like the man with all the answers above said...

1) How old is your gas?
2) The reving up and down could meen your idle stabelizer valve is bad.
3) Is it running around 2Krpm and running rough at idle in gear? Could be your torque converter on the auto trans is binding, or not proper fluid amount. But since it is hovering around 2K, I am guessing the stall could be set to 1500rpm-2K and that would make the car stutter and want to stall cause it is trying to engage the torque converter, and your foot is on the brake.

Until you get it checked out I would put the car in neutral at stops. Check all your vaccuum lines, make sure there are no leaks and the idle stablizer is working...
