Fuel system help

About a month ago my car kept cutting out at high speeds. The engine would just stop. Then about 10 minutes later it would start back up. I figured well it must be the fuel pump, but then I talked to my neighbor who is a mechanic, and he told me I should replace the filter because when the filter is clogged the pump overheats trying to keep up with the engines needs and then cuts off. And after the pump cools down it will start back up. That made sense because it only cut out when the RPMs were high for a while at like 60-70 mph. So I went ahead and replaced the filter and everything was fine and dandy until yesterday when it cut out just like it used to. And then started back up after a few minutes. Since then I haven't driven more than 15 minutes at a time and I have been shifting at like 2k rpms to work the pump as little as possible. It has been okay, but I need to fix this. I'm thinking that the pump is bad and the filter replacement made it just easy enough that the pump could supply the engines needs again. But now the pump is worse, does this seem right????

How hard is it to install a fuel pump on a 4th gen? If anyone who has done it or knows how to do it could help me out a little bit it would be awesome.

Thanks, Any help is greatly appriciated,
Nick

Re: Fuel system help

Luckily, installing it is pretty easy. Cut the battery, turn a bolt at the fuel rail to relieve fuel pressure, and then go at the fuel pump from the trunk. It's connected to the fuel tank. I remember one of the bolts being a bitch though.
