Wrong engines installed by GM

Many years ago (I think in the 70s), General Motors was sued for installing Chevrolet engines in Oldsmobile and other vehicles. If my memory is correct, it was a class action suit for mix and match engines within Olds, Chevrolet, Buick and Pontiac.

Can anyone refer me to that case of provide any specifics?

Thanks,
Joe

Ah, yes, the infamous Chevymobiles. Think it was 1977 or 78 when they started putting Chevy 305's (?) in Delta 88's, then Cutlasses. The beginning of the end for Oldsmobile IMHO.

actually it was 1978, 1979 and 1980. The true olds 350 was only available in the 79 Hurst Olds otherwise if you had a V8 from the factory it was either a 305 with 2bbl or 4bbl or 350. These were Chevy small blocks. Yes there was a class action suit filed against gm for this. This did not pertain to Chevy only the BOP line (Buick, Olds & Pontiac).

Re: Wrong engines installed by GM

The reason why this was done was that in some areas (california) the BOP engines would often not meet the emissions standards but the Chevys would.
IMHO it was nonsense. The engines were comparable in performance.
In Canada, GM used Chevy engines in Canadian made full size Pontiacs from the 1950's into the 1980's, with no lawsuits or complaints,

( The American made pontiacs sold in Canada (intermediate and Firebird) came with Pontiac engines)
