Mclaren questions for a newbie

Hey all, i'm new, wanna ask all y'all mac guru some questions, i recently purchased a navy blue 1:12 mclaren f1, i presume that everything on the 1:12 is like exact to the real car. and there are some stuff on it i just don't understand why they are there for.

in the front trunk, there are 4 cap kinda things, blue red yada yada yada, and a big silver thing as well, what are those?

the left lagage compartment is it battery and stuff?

the right one?

and i quote this from
http://www.ferraris-online.com/Artic...00408_SS.shtml
Quote:
"For all that it “lacks,” the car does incorporate active aerodynamics, with a pair of lightweight fans that suck air from diffusers under the car so that no huge rear wing is needed to maintain stability at speed though a small tail spoiler does rise to lend some rear downforce."
can you guys tell me what da hell that thing is? and where is it? can i find it on the 1:12 model?

cheers boys,

great work here!

They are the caps for fluid reserviors. The blue in the front is labeled "SCREEN WASH" (read: wiper fluid), the golden/yellow cap is "CLUTCH FLUID" and the two red ones furthest to the rear are both labeled "BRAKE FLUID". I assume the separate reserviors for the brake fluid support a fully split system.

The silver sections are some kind of heat shielding - I suspect they could have something to do with the cockpit heater, but I could be off on that suspicion. I'll defer to someone else here for confirmation or correction on that.

To the right of those items you'll find the on-board toolkit - seems to be painted green or grey on the 1/12ths - with the F1 logo on it. The red ball on the far right is the front tow hook, which gets screwed into the underside of the nose when needed.

Yes, battery, fuse blocks and ECUs are located in the forward portion of the left luggage compartment. On the real car, those items are all hidden by a carbon fiber panel.

The right one houses the oil tank for the engine.

You won't find those items on your model, but you can see where they are generally located in the lower right corner of this sketch:

Follow the arrow where it reads "Cooling of ECUs, Suction fan assists engine bay cooling". You can just make out the fans in the drawing, but they are hidden away in the engine bay and not seen in photos or on your model.

I figured I could add a little more detail on the side compartments. They're really a unique feature on the F1 when it comes to supercars. Here's some photos of the ones on the AutoArt 1/12th for those not familiar, along with the view of a set from a real F1 for comparison.

The first set shows that carbon cover panel I mentioned previously.

Unfortunately on the model, the luggage compartments are inadequately shallow. The real ones offer about 3 times as much depth as evidenced by this photo of F1 #007 taken by Drew.

Here's a few more angles on that side compartment, showing that the carbon cover panel is hinged at the bottom, but can also be removed.

Here's a close up shot of the top of that cover - it has holes for the modem switch, modem port, and battery charger above a listing of McLaren's track history prior to the F1s introduction.

Here's a better view of the oil tank and feed lines in the right compartment.

As well as a close up of the plaque on the side of it and more gold foil shielding the luggage compartment from the heat of the oil tank.

Finally, underneath the carpet floormat of the right luggage compartment you will find this wheel nut wrench.

On the other side, McLaren have included a small container of additional fuses and bulbs, as well as a first aid kit.

Here's a closer shot of that container:

It's details and creative packaging like you see here that truly make the F1 the greatest car ever made in my mind. A big thanks to Drew for a lot of those detail shots on F1 #007.

The shots of the red 1:12th come from Alex who runs supercarfreak.com. I have one as well, but mine is blue and I haven't taken too many detail photos of it. When he first got his he posted shots from almost every angle imaginable.

Well you are correct, the large box labeled "F1 KENWOOD" in the nose is indeed the CD changer. I just didn't mention it because I figured it was obvious to most people.

Nope, I don't work for McLaren. I would love to join the Customer Care team for the F1, but I have a feeling I wouldn't be able to continue to share things here if I did.

Re: Mclaren questions for a newbie

Hey Peleton,

i have another question, which is regarding to the lemans, i don't have a orange 1:18, but i got 3 gtrs, and it puzzles me that at the right side lagage pod, there is a huge intake, what is that for? and there is none on the left hand side.

i have also seem some photos that the lemans don't have any interior trim and a lot of switches appearently replaces the cool instruments found beside the handbrake and the gear stick is that right? and what are the guages on the left hand side of the driver seat is for?

finally the Leman's engine revs to 8500rpm? officially claim the car will acheive 330kms an hour, with 1000rpm more than the standard f1, but 70kms/h less than the standard f1? is that because of a shorter gear ratio or?

thanks peleton, really appreciate your help, your mac knowledge overwhelms me

Thanks! I don't know everything and am still learning myself, but I do help whenever I can.

The intake in the right side luggage compartment on the GTRs (and the LMs) feeds air to an additional oil cooler not found on the standard F1s.

Here's a shot of that from LM3 that Drew provided us earlier when this vent was discussed:

Yes, the LM lacks some of the comfort and convenience features found on the F1. However, some of the controls that were mounted on the chassis spars near the e-brake handle and shifter have been moved to a separate pod under the right side dashboard now. Thanks to karc for this photo:

And dugmar for this one:

Those gauges you are referring to have never been clearly identified, and I have not seen them on any other F1s besides LM3. I assume you are referring to the two that are located on the left chassis spar within the left passenger footwell seen in this shot:

Drew mentioned they have something to do with the air-fuel mixture - they could simply be A/F ratio gauges, possibly one for each bank of cylinders. The only other F1 LM interior I have seen photos of was the prototype's, XP1 LM, and I don't recall seeing them there.

The shorter gear ratios on the LM/GTR are to blame for the lower top speed figure, along with the additional drag created by the bodyparts that have been added to provide downforce such as the rear wing and front splitter.

Re: Mclaren questions for a newbie

Peleton, thanks for all the infors,

got two more questions, they relates to the Lemans,

i got few 1:18 gtr models, and it seems that on the right hand side lugage pod there is a huge intake, what is that for? and since there is nothing on the left, i presume it is still the lugage space, but why only on the right?

the interior is trimless, what's all the extra gauges? on the left side of the driver seat.

the engine is said to be 680hp and reving at 8500rpm, with 1000rpm more, and 50hp advantage, the top speed is 70km/h less? is that because of a shorter gear ratio?

thanks pel? your the man

and ROCK ON!

It seems I already answered most of those questions. If I wasn't clear, let me know. I'm guessing you were just quoting your post from above.

I'll answer the additional questions I see filtered in there:

On the opposite side the LM has an unfinished storage compartment. It's floor is made of a mesh screen and underneath that screen you will find a smaller set of fuses and bulbs, along with the red wheel nut wrench seen on the F1, as well as a tire pressure gauge. As for why both sides don't feature the vent, they must have only required one oil cooler and given that the vent is not for aesthetics, but is instead functional, there was no need to preserve visual symmetry by including one on the opposite side.

I believe that on the GTRs, this storage area was used to house the on-board pneumatic jacking system's compressor tank and hoses. I know that is the case on the longtail GTRs, but I haven't seen any photos of that panel removed on any of the short tail GTRs. I'd assume that is the case though.
