2001 SLT onstar microphone feed back

Hey Guys: Anyone experiencing any static or feedback from the ceiling mounted microphone(over the drivers seat) for the onstar. The system isnt activated, but is operational. Is there a way to deactivate the system. I asked a local service advisor @ the GMC dealership, he told me it was a little fan!!!, I stopped talking to him. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance............. Mike

Re: 2001 SLT onstar microphone feed back

Hi,
the OnStar microphone is attached to the side of the Overhead Console. Unscrew that and disconnect the microphone connector near the front edge. See, if this makes a difference and follow up accordingly, and do plug it back in.
Let us know, how this ends up.
There are fans in places you may not know about, so be nice to the dealer. They certainly have more experience with this than you or me.
Take care, Eggert

You guys are kidding right ? I always thought the OnStar communications were through a designated stereo/radio speaker.

You may want to go back and listen to him. That IS a little fan. It's the climate control sensor. My fan up there buzzes sometimes, almost to to point where I may do something about it .

Re: 2001 SLT onstar microphone feed back

Hi YukonGMC,
for the 2001 year the Onstar cell phone antenna is in the driver's side quarter window in the top front corner. The later models have a stubby antenna on the front edge of the roof on the driver's side (the passenger side has the XM antenna).
There is a hands free cell phone microphone in the headliner. The Onstar buttons are in the cubby hole space to the right of the dashboard, the later ones have the buttons on the rear view mirror.
The GPS antenna is on the windshield over the rear view mirror.
The Vehicle Communication Unit (VCU) is under the dashboard cover in front of the driver.
The Vehicle Interface Unit (VIU) is under the dashboard on the passenger side.
The VCU is the cell phone, the VIU is the GPS receiver.
The VIU plugs into the radio using the remote CD player connection socket. If there is a remote CD player then a splitter harness is used. The plugs have 32 pins with all kinds of analog and serial data.
And yes, they do use the stereo speakers...
Take care, Eggert

I made an appointment with dealer, ordered a crow sandwich( just in case it is a fan).....seems to be getting louder. I tried pushing the onstar button to hear the "sales pitch" , didnt help, I also turned off the A/C ( remember the climate control theory)....no difference..........I ll let y all know what happens............Thanks for all the responses.........Mike
