3D Car Program

Hey all,

I'm a student studying computer science, more specificially, computer programming. Im also big with graphics/animations/modelling, and i think im quite good at it. Anywho, I need to make some things for my portfolio before I graduate, in 2 years. So, I was thinking...

Would you guys be interested in a program that allows you to view 3D models of DSM engines, axles, transmissions, (and all that jazz) where you can rotate and view all aspects of the parts, get the part numbers, possible links to sites to buy them, and more? I know this sounds like a lot, and maybe even stupid, but personally, I would love to be able to look at a 3D model of my engine to know what each part is and what it does.

Obviously, this would take time and alot of help from you guys. I have a NT motor, that's all. I would need pics and info on quite abit of stuff.

So would you be interested? I do very professional work when it comes to programming, so you wouldn't be dissappointed. If enough of you would like it, Ill be more than happy to do it. Please leave feedback. Thanks

Re: 3D Car Program

I think that would be awesome. I do some programming, and have done 3d modeling, animated too, but I think your at a way higher level then me. I think that something such as different compressor wheels would be neat to view in 3d and compare their differences. I think the whole engine being in 3d, with parts being able to unhook from the original model to view as a separate piece would be cool too. Good Luck!

Re: 3D Car Program

That would be great! I always wonder how my engine looks without leaning over it all day.

Re: 3D Car Program

That's a wonderful idea. I think the Mitsubishi dealerships have 3D (and I use that term loosely) pictures of certain areas of the car that they use to find parts/part numbers. However, I think it sucks donkey balls, because a lot of things don't even show up on their little 3D pictures.

If you made a 3d program where the user could move around the engine bay, drivetrain area, suspension, and select each item and view the part number/name and possibly even a short description of the item, THAT would be sweet. I'd start off by going to the local Mitsubishi dealership and having them print off each of their "3D" pictures of the different areas of the car. This should just give you a nice start on the parts and part numbers. Good luck, and have fun!

P.S. If you need any help on the programming aspect of this, just let me know. I've taken quite a few classes and have done a good bit of programming in C and C++.

Re: 3D Car Program

This would be a great thing to have and definately be a hell of a lot of work...i think also what would be awesome is if you could have the parts moving within the engine so we could "see" what happens with maybe different sized parts, don't know if that is possible or not but be awesome all in the same.

Re: 3D Car Program

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if I was going to do it, but since there's a postive feedback, I will do it. It will take awhile, programming is easy to me, but the accurate modeling of the engines will be tough.

I will be starting it when I get free time. With work, and the closing of the school year, time is limited. I will be posting pics and information as it becomes available.

Please don't rush me. That's all I ask. I will put up a website with information on it, again, when I have time. If I need information, I will ask here.

You guys have helped me in so many ways, and I want to give back.
