Question Spedometer Cable 1994 XL

Hello Everyone,

Recently I have purchased a 1994 Ford Explorer XL. The vehicle is awesome, I just adore it. There is of course a problem I'd like to fix but am not sure how to do it. The spedometer starts to fluctuate around 65-70 kms/hr...sometimes it doesn't bother to do it at all. My old chev caprice did that when I first got it and I just gave it a light grease and it's been fine ever since (4yrs ago). The problem is that I've asked 2 ex machanics and both of them say it's an electronic spedometer...I would agree but I hear the noise when it goes freaky. Also, one says it's attached to a bolt on the tranny while the other says it's a PITA because it would be behind the dash. All I want to know and do is give it a light greasing or get it fixed, if it's electronic...I just don't know why you'd hear an electronic spedometer. Could someone enlighten me here? It's very much appreciated.

I'm not sure whether it is mechanical or electronic. I'd bet electronic but all you have to do is crawl underneath and look for the mechanical cable attached to tranny. If it's there, it's mechanical. If it's not ,it's electronic. Electronically, I'd guess it has some sort of magneto moving the needle, which could possibly cause a buzzing sound if faulty. Again, I don't know for sure. You can pull the cluster and check it out!
