Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

I would like to know what kind of Gas Mileage people are getting
on their Geo Metros...?

What is the AVERAGE MPG for Geo Metros?

First data point - mine is 46.5 mpg with aggressive, lead foot driving
on a 1.0 L 5 speed transmission. '93 GM.

Add your data here:

Year Geo Made -
Miles per Gallon -
Type of driving -

OK '95 hb.....120000 miles....1.0-3...5spd....w/ A/C...average right at 50mpg, 70% highway @ 65 mph 100 miles round trip daily A/C running maybe 25% of the time. Not exactly lead-footing it, but not driving like grandma, either. Mileage has been consistant about the last 6 or 7 weeks. (since it started getting warmer out) I'd also like to see everybody respond to this...should be interesting...Doug7x

'93 manual holding right around 47mpg during mostly highway speed. Up a few from Winter average. Metro has 321k miles on it.

321K...is this on the orig. engine & trans?....if so, that's great....I know these little 3-bangers run for a while, but STILL!!! Keep changing the oil, & don't argue with the gas mileage...you're still beating the hell out of everything on the road except other Metros, & you're doing better than most of them!!!...my tips to you.#1..warm it up when it's cold out.(make sure your oil pressure is up before you drive it hard). #2...Keep a close eye on your coolant level & your temp. guage....don't let it overheat. #3...If you develope a small leak anywhere(coolant, engine oil, trans fluid, etc.),DON'T MESS WITH IT...just add what you need to. #4...Be sure that your front disc calipers don't start sticking on you...I've heard that this happens a lot, & it'll beat the hell out of your drive train if you let it go too long, & if you are driving mostly in town, you may not even notice it. To test this, find a level road, get it up to 55 mph, put in neutral, & see how far you coast (watch your odometer). You should be able to coast at least 1/2 mile. If not, jack it up & spin your wheels by hand & see which one is dragging. Good luck with this old gas miser...you can PM me with any questions if you think I can help, although I don't always check my e-mail every day....I'd like to hear from other high-mileage metro owners also. (by post or by PM...share your knowledge & experiances)...Doug7x

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

Original engine and trans, although both have been worked on. Since this topic is about mpg, I track it on my car as a indicator of potential problems or maintenance that may need to be done.

I don't let any leak go as it will not fix itself and may get worse. Not that I fix them all right away, but at least want to understand where they are coming from. Good advice on the brake noise - have some now myself...

'92 That turned over 200,000 miles a few weeks ago but I put a JDM motor in it about 8000 miles ago. From my understanding most of these motors fail because of burnt valves and it seems that is caused by clogged EGR passages. Cleaning once a year is recommended.

Using Amsoil Synthetic on a one year change cycle. Ten degree cam sprocket. Fourteen inch wheels. Getting 44MPG with 70/30 Highway/City ratio. Cruises at 75MPH and drive it hard enough to keep up with rush hour...so is that agressive?

Sway bars are on the way. Body kit is setting in the garage awaiting enough time to fit it properly. I was concerned about the weight taking some mpg away, but the whole kit only weighs in at 30lbs. It's ABS not fiberglass.

...and a cam will be in the works....

'96 1.0 litre 3-cyl. 5-spd. 148,000 miles

Winter - w/ snows: 42 - 46 in mixed city/hwy driving

Summer - w/ all-season radials: 47 - 52 in mixed city/hwy driving (no A/C)

I generally 'stay out of it' and watch my ScanGauge to optimize MPG, but sometimes I do need every one of the 55 horses while on hills or merging.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

95 5-speed, Im getting 39 MPG with about half 60mph-highway and half city, no A/C. this seems low by comparison

The car had the engine replaced a few years ago, it originally had a 4cyl and now has a 3cyl, could they have not changed the transmission? would that be a problem?

My 90 5-speed with 158,000 miles gets 40 in the city with subfreezing temperatures. 50mpg at aroudn 60mph, and 44mpg about around 80.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

I get between 36 and 47 depending on the driving conditions. Driving all highway, I get very poor, as highway speeds here are 110km/h and most people speed enough that I end up having it on the floor the entire time, usually in 4th, to keep up on the hilly highways. Town driving, I get really high. I'm driving a lot of high end stereo gear in my car, usually at excessive volume, so it drags my mileage down a bit, not to mention carrying myself (280lbs+) and the gear (200lbs+) around all the time.
