Engine Surge

I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu with 37,000 miles on it and you will be driving down the freeway and the engine will surge (You can see RPM's jump and Cruise will shut off). I have had it to the dealership 8 times and 1 Trans shop and nobody can fix it. Can anyone give me any ideas as to what I should try next?

Someone mentioned it could be a switch on the brake pedal that controls torque converter lockout. Does any one have any more information on this angle?

My Wife has had the same problem with her car. We have spent around $1200 on it, to finally find out that it was the Mass Air Flow Sensor. We've had the transmission rebuilt, tuneups, has been hooked to a computer numerous times. The last time it was hooked to a computer, it threw a code of PO 741, which is to do with the torque converter not locking up. But, it wasn't it after all. Don't know why, but they replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor and that fixed it. Good luck.

If your having problems with your1997-2002 Malibu and it's still covered under factory warranty. Get rid of it! You guys must understand that these cars will begin to nickel and dime you at an exponential rate as time goes on. You will solve 1 problem and the 2 more will pop up later on down the road.

That is why there is no resale on these cars, and are being sold at cut-rate prices, and usually from auto wholesalers. GM doesn't want them on their lots as used

I would sell it if I could afford to. It has been a good car up till this problem.

I just replaced the MAFS so we will see how this works, but does anyone know what the swiches are called on the breaks? I know it is a torque lockout but not sure past that.

does it only do this when it is raining or high humidity?
Mine did this when it rained turned out it was just a plug wire shorting out

I just finally spent the $7.00 for the brake switch and it fixed the problem. Worst thing was getting the switch set correctly.
