Unhappy 1999 Tahoe thumping rattle sounds

Help I have a 1999 tahoe 4x4 with 103,000 miles on it. When turning left I get a rattle clunking sound and a clunk. You also hear the clunk when going over a bump.

We thought it was coming from the front end, the mechanic checked it out but could not locate it there. The sway bars have been checked out as have the u-joints shocks and other misc. front end parts.

There is some play in the steering shaft but not enough to make the thumping clunk sound.

when turning the steering wheel left you do feel a clunk in the same position roughly 45 degrees from straight. With further listening the clunk seems to come after the front wheels have hit a bump, or when turning left.

It does not happen on paved roads unless turning left.

The steering shaft has been replaced ~ 75,000

any thoughts

KD

Have you had someone turn the wheel while parked and listen\look for the clunk in the driveway?
