1989 Escort.......... smoke at startup

smoke at start up (Post #7)
When I first start my 1989 Escort in the morning I get a puff of smoke from the tailpipe which will last several blocks
I have been told by Auto Value that it is the valve seals./ What is actually involved to do this.
I have replaced the water pump and the timing belt, plus the front outer axle assembly.

Secondly I need a windshield for this car. I have searched the auto wreckers, but find one from a 1990 which seem to be very plentiful will not fit , it is a little smaller. Could Ford have retooled for this one year?(1989)
Thanks
James

It is not a big job to do just the valve seals. The head doesn't have to come off if the shop doing the work has an air injector that can be threaded into the spark plug holes. This will hold the valves in place while you remove the keepers, springs and valve seals. I don't have a flat rate manual so I don't know how many hours the job would take. It would be a guess to say it would cost about $250. Good luck on finding a windshield. Some of the larger parts places can locate one for you on their teletype to other bone yards.
