95 S-10, manual trans. 5-speed
I bought this truck used. 108,000 miles. It had a vibration in the rear end. We replaced both U-joints. Rode great for 2 days... Then, Going 65 down the freeway, I hear a brief rumble....a pop sound and the truck stalls. Now...
I'm on the side of the road...After driving a ways in 5th gear, Shifting back to 4th, 3rd etc, it seemed very tight. Not liking the idea of changing gears AT ALL. I depress the clutch and start the truck...starts fine...but as soon as I release the clutch it stalls and it also won't move. When the clutch is disengaged, you can smell clutch burning as well. Moving the shift lever, It seems to go into gears but won't move the truck...it just stalls. It seems to free roll as well weather the clutch is engaged or not. Any Ideas what has happened? Thanks! |

Re: 95 S-10, manual trans. 5-speed
First try changing the oil in your transmission. I believe that it requires ATF fluid, but check your owners manual first. If someone has changed it before there is a good chance that they used regular manual trandsmission fluid.
Someone may have towed it at some time with the back wheels on the ground which fries the transmission bearings. Even on your standard. You might have run it out of oil too. There is a good chance that someone will have to pull the transmission and replace all the bearings. And really hope that you don't have any more damage. Lots of luck |

Fluid full
We checked the fluid levels and they are full. I might also add that right before this happened, my check gauges light came on as well. Might have been cause by stalling but...not positive. There is still tension on the clutch when its depressed, and the shifter moves from gear to gear loudly but still won't move after the clutch is released as well as the burning smell when the clutch is released. Sound like something is bound up? Your imputs are appriciated =)

Re: Fluid full
NO NO NO Not ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). Syncromesh. Use ONLY Syncromesh. One of the best transmission fluids out there. Infact the truck requires Syncromesh. As for the Clutch Problem.
Check your Clutch Fluid reserve. If its low you may have what happened to me. My Slave and master cylinder went out on my clutch. AAmco fixed it for about 500. Its a pain in the butt job, so i didnt want to attempt to do it myself. well good luck dude. keep us posted |

Re: 95 S-10, manual trans. 5-speed
That's why I said to check the owners manual. I was certian that it isn't good old 80-90, and I know that some mechanics still pump it in.
To me it still sounds like a transmission problem, and if the transmission is binding it could over work the clutch, which could explain the burning clutch smell. there is also a small chance that it's the diff, but since it wouldn't have been touched it's highly unlikely. Besides you can always shift without the clutch if you really have to. It's called Powershifting. And BIG truckers do it all the time, along with motorcycle riders. You only really need the clutch to start up and stop |

Good Point crazycory!
Although he just got the truck, and probably doesn't know what the former owner drove it like Porbably the easiest way to figure out the problem is remove the driveshaft and jack up the rear end and try spinning the wheels. |
