Transmission grinding gears

Hey everybody,

I've got a Borg Warner T56 transmission that grinds gears in 5th gear and reverse. Reverse has always grinded since I owned the car and 5th has just recently started. The gear grinds only after/when I let off of the clutch. If I hold the shifter into the gear quite hard, and slowly let out the clutch then some times it will fully engage and I can drive normally in that gear.

I took the transmission apart and found a few things. First, the shifter fork pads have broken off of the 5/6th shift fork. Second, the keys in the synchronizer assembly have the top portion broken off in the 5/6th synchronizer. And on both synchros the teeth are quite round. I've got a few pictures to help explain things:

5/6th shift fork missing the pads.

Synchro keys, notice the middle one is missing the top portion.

Ok, the main questions I have are, would not having shift fork pads cause the grinding? Would the broken key cause the grinding? Would the rounded teeth cause the grinding?

Here's the real issue, I can't really see the pads causing the grinding, the key looks functional, even though it's missing the top, and the rounded teeth on 5th and reverse are no worse than on 6th. So nothing really stands out as a glaring issue.

The simple answer is YES. Everything you said will cause grinding.
