Hey guys i was wondering how to spend my hard earned money, when i had the semi-sane idea of building an rb30de with the GT-R inlet manifold, and the VVT head from the R34 GT-T.
I'd like to know if anybody's done this hybrid before. I'm not too keen on a hair dryer cause my insurance is $750pa (i'm 18), and i'm an ex-V8 nut so i like a bit of torque. :smoker2: Bridgestone:smoker2: P.S. i want to thrash my mate in his RS legacy if at all possible (rolling start) |

88Borex86Stroke will give you a3076cc engine. That would envolve Rb25DE + New Crank, Connecting rods, Custom pistons, Head, Fuelsystem, cooling system. There is a little more envolved in it then just sticking those parts in as I'm sure you know. I don't know every little thing that would be envolved but I trust the mechanic who would be doing this would know them ![]() Now I read somewere that there are issues with the the RB30 block and harmonic vibrations at over 7500~ RPM. I'm sure some one who knows more about this then me will happen along sooner or later, but in the meen time good luck with it

I have a Zoom Extreme Performance Edition which has a VL Twin Cam Conversion. Std RB30E got 78rwkw.
RB30DE got 103rwkw with a comp of 8.3:1, the trick is to increase the comp and map the ecu. then 120rwkw is acheivable. They used the head from a RB25DE (R32) which hasn't got the VVT. By using the standard pistions from the RB30 Block and fitting a RB25DE head you will achieve a compression ratio of 8.3:1. This is a little low especially for a NA motor unless you are looking at running turbo with super high boost with mega horsepower. If you were to fit a set of Custom Forged Pistions which bring the comp. up to around 9:1 you might get an extra 10rwkw if your lucky. Having a comp of 9:1 with a set of forged pistions is a perfect base for a turbo later. And with a 3ltr there is no way it is going to be laggy it will even feel more grunty down low than your average 5L Commodore. With a turbo running standard boost you will be looking at atleast 170rwkw. Slap on a Highflowed turbo instead and you will have boost which spools from around 1800rpm and you will be making well over 220rwkw. I used to be a V8 head.. I owned a VS 5.0L Manual Commodore. It used to feel more laggy than my R32 RB20DET skyline. My skyline gives a really good kick in the back at around 3000rpm and the Commodore used to be laggy as hell until 3000rpm. Keep in mind also the Skyline has a higher reving motor therefor they have used a ~4.3 diff ratio compared to the commodores 3.08 diff ratio. That is why the skyline feels like it is a lot less laggier than the commodore. It gets to 3000rpm way quicker. Running 12psi boost which is normal for a R32 RB20DET with a good exhaust I made 152rwkw. It is a hell of a lot quicker than the VS Commodore. It is only ever so slightly quicker than a VT 5.7L 6 Speed Commodore. Build the motor now with the Standard head that you already have if you have the RB25 in your R32 buy a Series II VL NA Motor (Series II has the option for the turbo oil galleries) rebuild it with forged pistions. Then get your ECU mapped to suit. You will probably get around 120rwkw with a mapped ecu. Then in a couple of years slap a turbo on. I am 22 and a rating 2, i pay approx $1500 for my R32 but i could have got it for $1392 if i shopped a round a little more (DAMN). Do what I said don't waste your time and money on the VVT head because you will have trouble with the ECU etc. It isn't worth the money for the performance increase that you will get. (bugger all) Also as a guide my R32 RB20DET with the std exhaust got 115rwkw. You will be there with the RB30. Shock some turbo heads & V8 Heads. ![]() Don't worry about the 7500rpm Harmonic vibration, it is true but with the 3L you don't need to rev it past or up to there to there to make 220+ rwkw. Which in a R32 is well in to the 12sec quarters if you can get traction.

After I get the highflow std rb20det turbo with the GT25 internals, i'm going to start the slow process of rebuilding the rb30 block then eventually drop it in to my r32..
![]() The block is $200 AUS Custom Forged Pistions 9:1 is $1400 Rebuild around $1200 RB25DE head around $800-$1000 Apparently with the RB30det you get a decrease in fuel consumption over the rb20det as you don't have to rev the rb30det in to the boost therefor you use less juice.. Well thats what i've been told by the bloke who has done around 15 of the conversions.

Me... I've looked in to it and found out every thing that I need to do.
It will be a slow build up... By then My Rb20DET will be buggered. Its basically as simple as rebuilding a bottom end and using a std Nissan head gasket (RB30) and bolting the head on. I'm also getting the Block O-Ringed. Got a Pit and Engine hoist so it should help.

thanks
Thanks for your help guys, but i've still not yet found anybody who's done it NA.
I'd still like to try the VVT head, cause you see people with adjustable cam gears around, surely it must be easier to change a map than it is to change the static timing then have to re-map it anyway. Engine management will need to be aftermarket anyway so that won't cause too much hassle (apprentice auto-electrician) I was thinking comp about 9.5:1- 10:1 it'll be NA for quite a while. Does anyone know of a cam supplier for NA skylines? Big cams (these are the types of problems i must face) Any comments on the 6 throttle body manifold?

RB30DE
Ive just finish my RB30de engine, its the RB30 block decked 0.8mm with the RB25 NA pistons ( same bore as the RB30) which gives you 10.5:1 comp. The head is RB25NA with VVT, but you have to run a oil line up to the head to run it.
I run it with Kalmaker/Delco engine managment. You can see it at www.240z.org in the members pics or http://au.photos.yahoo.com\arkij60 Steve Last edited by RB30-ZED; 05-01-2002 at 02:52 AM. |

well rb30 zed I take my hat off to you how does it run any power figures.
was it worth it. I'm in awe as I thought this would be my dream engine. meggala

Thanks Meggala, still waiting on the engineering certificate to be finished, but should be on the road in a week i hope. It is a very smoth engine, but the RB30 block is about 40mm taller than the smaller RB' so its a tight fit if you use the over the top manifold, well in a zed anyway.

turbo size for an RB30DET
I was wanting to know if anyone has their opinion on what they think is an appropriate sized turbo for a Nissan RB30DET running a compression ratio of 8.3:1?
I have been sourcing information through the internet and the best turbo I found that won't strangle the motor is a T04B with a 62-1 trim compressor,as the CFM rating compared to a lower revving RB30ET is higher,I estimate from whatthe Zoom magazine said on their conversion is that it revs 1500 RPM higher so I took it as being around 6800 - 7000 RPM as the RB30ET revs to 5300 - 5500 RPM,I however have read that an R34 Nissan Skyline RB25DET engine does 6,400 RPM. Someone mentioned a while back somewhere a T3 off a VG30DETT would do but I calculated that "all" of the T3's won't be able to take it (will lose power at high RPM's). I am planning on running it on a boost pressure of 7 PSI which I have mapped out it starts generating boost at 2000 RPM and runs right into the turbos highest efficiency range at High RPM range (between 6000 - 7000 RPM). I planned on going this way with using a bigger (3 litre engine) and low boost to look after the turbo better but my feeling is it ma be more power than I need,240 flywheel KW will do me but I think the efficiency of the turbo will be impaired. Does anyone else have any ideas?,I have heard of T3/T4 hybrids. |
