Question Question about shutdown noise

I'm not sure if this is a problem or not. I am on dial-up and shut my computer down completely when I'm done using it. Sometimes when I use it and I know I will be using it again a short time later, ( within 3 hours, ) I will place the computer on standby mode. When I do this and comeback to the computer and use it, and then go to shut it down, the tower makes a different noise than when I shut down without previously being in standby mode. The best way to describe the noise difference when shutting down after being in standby mode would be it sounds like a stuttering type noise versus the "normal" noise that occurs during a normal 'non standby' shutdown. Anybody have any ideas on why the difference in the shutdown noise? It is a Dell Dimension 4400 3 years old, Windows Xtra Problems OS .

Re: Question about shutdown noise

Have you updated the BIOS since you got it? That will probably fix it. Could be a power thing (voltage) too.

Thanks Oz, I am going to do some research into it. I haven't really heard of the term BIOS so I did a Google search to learn more. I came across this page http://www.wimsbios.com/ and there seems to be a lot of information for me and how to update it. I don't know about the voltage thing. the computer seems to operate normally after I take it off standby and use it for an hour or two and then shut down normally. I would think the computer would use the same amount of voltage shutting down normally whether I was previously on standby mode or not. Oh well, I will read the info on that site and see what I need to do to update and see if that solves the 'problem'(if that could be considered a problem.)

Do the update, if it doesn't help, let me know and we can try some other things.

it could be just the computer deleting the saved information fromt the stand-bye or does it erase that as soon as you turn it on?
