92 voyager - trans shifting problem

92 voyager - trans has about 55,000 on factory rebuild. Current problem is that sometime the trans shifts just fine. Then stop somewhere and start again it is 2nd lockup. If you pull over and put in park and shut the engine off and count to about 10 and restart and go the trans most of the time it shifts fine again, but sometimes not. It has new filter and oil. I know there are many controlling items, (camshaft sensor, speed sensor, etc.) too many to replace all. I did have a main seal leak repaired that could have coated some of the sensors. Anyone have any ideas or a checking order.

It does sound like an electronics issue - although I will say you should be sure that when the fluid was changed the correct fluid was used. In you case I believe that would be Mopar Type 7176 only. I'm fairly confident that it is not your current issue, but the wrong fluid will destroy your transmission quickly.

As for your problem, I have seen a faulty ECM cause this problem. But based solely on the cost of the parts I might try the Input & Output speed sensors first. Yes there are a lot of things it could be.

I have a 91 grand caravan that just did the same thing with the transmission. Eventually no amount of turning it on and off would solve the issue. I then went and did some research, and found that this is the preliminary sign of total transmission failure. I have read other peoples stories about similar problems. Eventually, as mine did, it won't ever shift again, and will inevetabley self destruct (going off of what I've been told).

Just out of curiosity, when the reman transmission was put in, did they update the transmission computer? Or did they only put in the new trans. Also, what version trans did they put in? The revamped version, or the original version? (I have a theory for the cause of this problem, but don't know yet)

our 91 grand voyager did this same thing.
Chrysler wanted to rebuild the tranny. i suggested the check the tcm/etax (transmission control module), they did and said it checked out ok. i still was not convinced and found a computer in a junk yard for $30.00 and now 2 trips from arkansas to wisconsin and back and 30,000 miles later it is still shifting fine. Our van had 141,000mi on it when it acted up and now has 174,000 mi on it.
btw i know the 91 to 93 caravan/voyager tcm/etax will work on your 92, and i suspect that newer ones will too so if you can find one in a yard like i did at a a good price then its a good cheap place to start.

Where about is this part to be loacted on the van? I would like to try and do the same. And is it the TCM of ECM I'm looking for?
