Unplugging ABS?-2000 Silverado

I've got a 2000 Silverado 2wd that just started having the following problem. When I come to a slow stop the abs kicks in and I have almost hit the car in front of me because of this. I have NOT noticed any abs lights on either.

First question: what could be the problem causing this?

Second question: I have never liked the ABS system. I hate it when "I" don't have control over how much braking pressure "I" want to apply.
If I pull the fuse, what possible problems can I expect besides a warning light or error code in the message center? I am unemployed right now and don't have the money to take this to a dealer. Is there a way I could troubleshoot the system myself? I am electrically inclined just never studied the ABS system.

So what should I expect if I pull the fuse on the ABS? I'll still have power brakes correct?

I think GM just issued a recall concerning ABS issues. Contact a dealer

Yeah? I just called a dealers service dept to try and get answers out of them, the guy went and asked a mechanic and all they said was, you cannot unhook a abs system, must have a mechanic look at it.

don't I have to receive a notification from GM first?

Not neccessarily. The dealer can pull your VIN and find if there are any outstanding recalls on your vehicle. the ABS recall was recent, and you may not have had time to receive notification.

I thought the abs recall was mainly for northern states?

I don't understand what mean you like to apply the amount of pressure you want to the brakes? I know i apply as little or as much pressure as I want. abs has nothing to do with the amount of pressure you use to brake, it just pulsates so they don't ever lock up.

Well, when I "stand on my brakes" I want them to LOCK UP! None of this rolling to a stop crap....

There are several threads on this problem - do a search. To cure "temporarily", I pulled the ABS fuse. The light is on all of the time, but I don't hit cars in parking lots anymore.

Spoke with service dept at chevy dealer. guy said there is no knowledge of a recall for the 2000 Silverado. He said the most likely problems is the wheels sensor have some corrosion where they mount inside the wheel flange. Sometimes its as simple as taking them out and cleaning them off and putting back and everything is ok.

Well, I just spent 87.00 on a new sensor which didn't fix the problem. First I took the passenger side wheel speed sensor off and it looked ok. I rotated the hub and visually checked all the teeth on the inside gear for any pieces of corrosion or grit. I then took the drivers side off and the plastic housing covering the copper coil on the sensor pulled off and stuck to the sensor hole. I ordered a new which cost me 87.00 bucks, (most dealers are charging 112.55 for it). At this point I don't know what to do, I tried to take the hub assembly apart but had no luck. I was going to visually inspect and clean the gear.

Anyone have any suggestions what I should do next? Maybe go back to the passenger side and see if a piece of grit got stuck to the magnet on the end of the sensor? This truck is beginning to piss me off.

For cleaning, once you've removed the rotor (or sensor), you're already half of the way there. Simply wipe off the grime with a degreaser-spritzed shop towel. Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to blow the debris off with compressed air! Static voltage can be generated, and then conducted to the ABS computer, which can damage it. Of course, you could disconnect the sensor to prevent this from happening, but why complicate things?

To clean the reference ring, use a small non-metallic brush and a squirt of degreaser. Make sure to go all of the way around the ring, and be thorough about it. If the rotor has been removed from the vehicle, its okay to carefully blow-dry the ring with compressed air. The ring does not need to be hospital-clean, just free of major debris and metal media, especially in the "troughs."

On captive rotor systems, cleaning the sensor is the same, but you'll have to work through its mounting hole to clean the reference ring, which will take some patience and, of course, a brush small enough to fit easily through the hole. It's also okay to use carefully applied compressed air to the ring as you turn the rotor/hub assembly. Now you can finish the rest of your vehicle's brake work, with the comfort of knowing that you've attended to a very important—and often neglected—aspect of your braking system.

G'day Gang,
My truck is in the shop right now for this exact problem. However, I did some research on the NHTSA website, and they are currently investigating this problem with GM. Go here, www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov and under Defect Investigation search for number PE05020. I filed a complaint today on this site, and if enough of us do it maybe they'll issue a recall for the problem. They already did in Canada.

I just fixed my truck with this problem after just about turning our local beer store into a drive through.
I have a 99 Silverado and to fix it, I removed the front wheels, calipers and rotors to access the abs sensors. Rust had built up under the plastic sensor bracket and actually swollen enough to push the sensor away from the pickup ring. I simply removed the sensor, scraped off the rust being careful not to get rust in the sensor hole, put some lithium grease on the sensor/hub mating surfaces to help slow down the corrosion and re-assembled.
I have not had this problem since, it did'nt cost anything and it's saved me alot of money in rear bumpers.
just be gentle when removing the sensors.

when you go to the stealers you must have the info in hand. I have found thay will try to say thay never heard of the recall. I even had one try to lie about the abs recall on my truck with the info on the screen. I was reading it over his sholder.

for ever problem my local stealers fixed i had to take the truck back to them to fix every thing thay tore up. trying to fix a simple problem.

I still have a leak in the door after 5 trips the last trip thay had to repaint the truck becouse there glue fix ate the paint off the truck.

after 12 trips to fix bad fuel milage and no power and shutering. I finly had to fix it. 12 dollers for a busted dist. cap. its funny thay called me the same day and found the tech bulleten on the busted dist cap.

i still have the abs problem.
