525i tranny issues only reverse help!

I just got a 90 525i from a friend of mine for cheap and the car all os sudden did not want to engage in gear(automatic) for him a few weeks ago. Fluid level was fine, color of fluid was good and the odd thing is that the car only goes into reverse. I read some threads which would suggest reading transmission codes but no light comes on the dash b/c I cannot drive the car. Any suggestions on things to check or possible problems, solutions or things to look into b/c someone told me a fluid and filter flush would not help.

p.s. is it true all 90 525i auto use a gm manufactered tranny from salzberg, France and not the common bmw zf germany tranny

What engine do you have, the M20 or M50? If it's the M50 you're prolly looking at a tranny rebuild. The pre '93 autobox' for the (then) new M50 engine had a design flaw, but there is a rep. kit out for it. Mine went at about 100k miles.

Try turning off your asc. I forget the exact part that you need to replace if your ASC is causing that problem.
