Jane Fonda Film Banned From Ky. Theaters

http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/ap/2...638082000.html

This thread can go in several different places so I think I'll cover all bases.

1. What do you guy's think about Jane Fonda being photographed on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun? What do you think about her actions that she did during that time?

2. Do you not want to see her movie because of this?

3. Do you agree with the movie owner for doing this?

Re: Jane Fonda Film Banned From Ky. Theaters

1. Having personal opinions about a war, nothing wrong with that. Going out and having pride in getting your picture taken with someone who is fighting against your country and trying to kill young men who you grew up with just because you dont agree with certian political decisions, thats fucked up.

2. That has nothing to do with why I dont want to see the movie. She is an actress, its not like she knew what she was doing.

3. I think the owner is an idiot. He decided not to show the highest grossing movie in the country right now because of what someone did 33 years ago, hes a dumbass.

That and her assurances that the POWs were being treated well makes her a traitor, an opportunistic NV whore and a disgusting person altogether.

I wouldn't go watch any movie she's in even if she's butt naked.

A man's got to live by his own convictions. He held his beliefs above the almighty $$$ -- how many people can do that? It may be foolish to some but he's earned my respect for sticking to his convictions, i.e., he did not flip-flop for profits' sake.

1. That she even visited the enemy during a war is heinous. Did you know that she visited an American POW camp? Did you know that at that camp she was handed a note by one of the POWs when she shook hands with them? Did you know she handed the note to one of the NV officers and got the POW punished for it?

2. Not really interested in the movie in the first place.

3. I respect the owner's actions 100%; that is what freedom is all about. If he wants to NOT show a movie, that is his right.

Oh yeah, and screw her for what she did. She strikes me as one of those self righteous people that (in their own mind) can do no wrong, then look down their nose at you when you call them on it.

Re: Jane Fonda Film Banned From Ky. Theaters

I would be inclined to boycott those theaters from now on. If Hanoi Jane offends me, I can decide for myself wheter or not I'll not see her movie. I do not need theater management making that decision for me.

Hanoi Jane's career and public image has suffered greatly for what she did. But at the time, that war was hugely unpopular among millions of americans, so at the time, perhaps it seemed like a good idea.

War protest is fine; the problem with Jane was that she used her celebrity to further her own poorly developed ideas, which frankly did not deserve the
attention she received.

So you'd punish the theater owner for having a strong opinion about Jane Fonda?

Of course war protest is fine. But going to the enemy country and making nice with them isn't. It would be akin to one of today's stars going to Iraq to visit the insurgent leaders, and spitting on one of the US captives before they were beheaded.

So, are you saying that it all boils down to you being pissed off because you were not given the opportunity to make the choice yourself?

Just curious, but if that were the case:
-- assuming you were a non-smoker, would you boycott restaurants who voluntarily banned smoking?
-- assuming you were a model citizen, would you boycott cities that banned porno shops/stores?
-- assuming you were not an illegal drug-user, would you boycott countries that criminalize illicit drug use?

So was exterminating Jews in Europe during WW2. She did not only stand up to be counted, she willing, consciously and deliberately participated.

Yup but the attention she did receive made it even more difficult to our POWs and most certainly contributed to POW deaths.

Interesting reactions, though, MagicRat

Since this is Fonda's comeback film I thought I'd recall what Elton John once said...

Re: Jane Fonda Film Banned From Ky. Theaters

Its your right to go see any movie you want to but it is also the movie owners right not to show a movie.

What if that movie owner was one of those POW that Jane Fonda turned in? Would he still have a right to be pissed off after 33 years?

Re: Jane Fonda Film Banned From Ky. Theaters

I stand up and applaud that theatre owner. My dad served in Vietnam, and we never had one thing having to do with her in our house. I remember asking once, why my dad made my mom take back one of those jane fonda workout tapes, she had rented once, and after he told me, I completely understood. and I wasn't that old.

If you desperately feel that you need to see that movie, I am pretty sure you can drive to another theatre and they will gladly take your money.

Re: Jane Fonda Film Banned From Ky. Theaters

Until pretty recently in American history Jane Fonda would have been executed for treason for her actions during the war. Tokyo Rose was no worse than Jane Fonda and claimed to have been forced to do what she did and was still found guilty of treason (rightly so)

Unlike old Rose Jane was all too happy to do what she did which makes her crime far worse. Jane Fonda and absolutely got away with high treason and the least she deserves is for every theatre in American to boycott her.
