It takes a fair amount of time. When I had mine replaced, the guy had to disconnect the exhaust manifold from the engine, and pretty much everything else that got in the way so he could pull it up a few inches. Along the way he took off the wheels, took the transaxle out, took off the bell housing, and then replaced the clutch. Then put it all back together. It sounds like a lot of work to me. I got a cheap clutch that cost around $180 (pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and clutch disc). He had the flywheel machined for around $25, and labor was $200 or $220, I can't remember. But he did it cheap. The Toyota dealer wanted $625 to do it with parts. I think nice clutches cost $250 and up.

You'd probably need a floor jack, engine hoist, nice metric socket set, and maybe a few special tools. Something to pull the clutch out with? The clutch alignment tool you need to put the new one on should come with.

Re: 92 celica clutch work

its failry staright forward to tell u the truth, just pull all the wires cables hoses...etc off the tranney or around it for room, take the downpipe off (not needed but its eayer to work with off) your main objectives before pulling the tranney are

halfshafts
starter
shift linkage

thats pretty much it, pull everything off and then take the 2 bottem motor moutns off, leave the tranny and passenger side mount on from here u have a few choices

i just put a jackstand with a flat piece of board underneath the oil pan and then just jacked the motor up a tiney little bit so i had the stuff seated nice and tight and then pulled the tranney side mount, pull the tranney off (8 bolts i think) and then clean the inside of the tranney off, i used some engine degreasant, pull the throwout bearing...pull the disk and plate off and then you can either have ur flywheel resurfaced or you can do it wurself with some 220 grit sandpaper, just go aroudn it in circles very lightly so your flywheel dosent have that glazed appearance

put everything back together, make sure the plate its 100% lined up otherwise the main shaft for the tranny wont slide in properly..put everything else together and ur good to go

Re: 92 celica clutch work

oh yea forgot, take teh crossmember off and downpipe right after u pull the wheels off and pull the halfshats out of the suspension (not the tranny)

once the DP and corssmember are off THEN drain the tranney fluid
