99 spyder GS Intake modification
I was wondering if anyone had some advice for intake modification on the spyder gs (note it's a spyder 2.4l 4g64 not the 420a)
I searched a bit and just found poeple on here asking the same questions a while ago with no real answers. I checked out ebay and didn't see much. Everything I found was listed for n/t non spyder. Before the lecture comes on you should have got a turbo. I know but I can't afford the insurance. ^^ It goes up quite a bit! Right now I have a big air box under the hood. Thats a pain to get the filter out of btw. the optimum solution for me would be to somehow get a cai or something of the sorts and direct the air up from the lower fender. I had several friends that have hydro locked their gs/rs by going through a bit of deep water 4-6 inches. In my area of the state over the summer it tends to rain every other day. So having the intake up a bit from the bottom of the chasis (I know that you get hotter air then..) would be an optimal solution. To be completely honest before this car I owned a 93 cavalier with 0 modifications on it. I'm not sure where to start and all my friends bought the kits off of ebay and don't know really how they work or how I would go about fabricating one myself. Since I got my spyder I have done a bit of work on it so I feel comfortable makeing and installing something. I just don't know where to begin. The GS-T's and GSX's that have an engine close to mine don't have cai cause they are turboed so I couldn't dig up much information. Should I screw the CAI idea and just drill a bunch of holes in the airbox? I was told by someone with a neon that this would be my best bet..

Re: 99 spyder GS Intake modification
Short ram intake instead of CAI, its a hard pipe with a filter that goes straight where ur air box goes.
Or u could just take off the air box and get a K&N air filter

Re: 99 spyder GS Intake modification
if you want overall performance...port and polish intake & exhaust ports and manifolds. upgrade to a bigger throttle body and get a short ram CAI. no hydrolock and you should have an overall increase in performance. otherwise just get a short ram CAI.

Re: 99 spyder GS Intake modification
How much extra insurance were they asking for?
I was on $100/month liability for my 98 NT Spyder (110K miles, stick) at the age of 19. Then when I was 20, I swapped it for a 97 turbo spyder (also 110K miles, stick), and my insurance DECREASED by $3/month... |

Re: Re: 99 spyder GS Intake modification
I pay 2300 a year now, good driver discount, age 19 and 10% off for having gone through driver training classes.
It was 3000 with all my discounts for the turbo. The extra for the turbo, the gas and the extra 700 a year for the year were too much for me I'm on a fixed income due to school and only part time work during the school year (thank heaven for best buy!) I do have collision so that brings the total up. With state minimums on the spyder gs it's like 1300 from my company. I can't switch because my parents wont and thats on their insurance. On my own the spyder gs with discounts applied, with collision would have been close to 4800 a year. Aparently until I hit 26 it will be that high. I also got a great deal on the car. 5500 + taxes.

I don't know about where to get a CAI for a spyder, but as long as you get a bypass valve for your intake it wont matter if you submerge your filter, and you won't hydrolock your engine. A bypass valve will cost you about 50 bucks but it worth it!!!!!

Re: 99 spyder GS Intake modification
What i'm thinking is leaving the stock piping to where the current airbox is. Then removing the airbox. and placing a pvc pipe to near the bottom of the chasis with a filter on it. I'll make sure I get the bypass valve. Thats essentially a cai homemade from what I read.
Hopefully that will work out..

Re: 99 spyder GS Intake modification
as for the insurance... I had my 96 spyder gst and I only paid about $83 a month for full coverage and full glass with a $500 deductible..... he he he he he
another option for your filter... K&N makes drop in filters for your stock airbox and you can use a hole saw to open the box air flow more... a friend of mine did that same thing with his grand prix gt.... worked pretty slick and had noticeable difference in performance. Other than that just go with a CAI....

Re: 99 spyder GS Intake modification
be careful if you decide to drill holes in your stock airbox. make sure that its on the right side so that you arent sucking in unfiltered air.
btw search 4g64.com they might have something.

Re: 99 spyder GS Intake modification
I did all I saw were pictures of someone with a cai but no instructions. I found a list of mods you can do. But not much info. I havn't gone through forums yet if they have them...
