Question Type of Oil?

Purchased 92 Geo Metro convertible with 125,000 on engine.

Should I use 5W-30 or 10W-30?

It's using oil if that makes a difference. I've already had the coolant checked and there's no oil there. There's about a nickle-size spot of oil left on the pavement when it's parked. Not smoking.

Thanks

I was told on an older geo motor to use straight 30 wt.

I have a good motor that does not leak and have been running 10-30 synthetic from WalMart and changing every 8k miles as an experiment.

That car now has 241k mile on it and doesn't burn anything. Seems to be working.

The drip in most cases is from the main shaft seal right behind the timing belt. Not much to worry about except for staining your driveway.

Put in a new seal next time you change your timng belt.

Good luck.

Biff

Re: Type of Oil?

Geohunter, my best reccommendation is 5w-30 in the winter and 10w-30 in the summer ... if you do your own oil changes. DO NOT use straight 30 weight in a 1.0 liter small oil passage suzuki engine, I would never give out that advice even for some small v-6s. The oil is just too thick to get to the top of the engine and you will eventually destroy the valve train or cam.

Re: Type of Oil?

Sure everyone has an opinion on this which means there is no absolute right answer. My own personal preference is to use 5w-30 year-round and change it every 3K miles.
