Post AWD in my b20 lude.

Hi, I came here to find out info about the AWD CIVIC, so that I can mate its drivetrain to my 89 Prelude. I've learned in about 5 minutes that the system can't handle my Prelude's stock Hp, let alone the mods I have planned. All I hear is that the REAR diff can't handle the power. Would an s2k or maybe a dsm rear end hook up? I also love the idea of having 6 gears although I think the gearing might be too tight for the highr horsepower b20. Thanks for all the help Im sure to get. What is the model designation for the awd cars(ex,lx,dx,etc.), so I know what to shop for.
I found out about the AWD Civic here: http://www.4thgenerationcivic.com/index.html

Re: AWD in my b20 lude.

...the s2k has a more powerful engine than the B20 so it should hold; a lot of custom fabbing is going to be needed. The transmission from a S2k also wont work in a AWD setup unless you figure how to hook up a transfer case from a truck or something; then youll also need to find a front differential/axle assembly thatll fit the car and wont interfere with the position of the motor(trucks can get away with that setup because the engine is placed up higher; sometimes sitting almost right next to the front diff). Also, im not sure how the center diff is setup in the DSMs but, youd have to change the final drive of the rear end to match that of the front.

Now i never heard of the AWD lude, but if the problem is just it cant handle the power and heat, then you can just try to get the parts treated or replaced with custom units.

Well you drive a 89 lude, IMO you should just get rid of it.

I know that there is no AWD lude. BUT, there is an AWD Civic. I want to find this civic, rip out its drivetrain and put it under my lude. Since the rear diff is weak, I wanted to replace it with either an s2k rear diff, or one from a dsm. The tranny should bolt up to my b20. That way I could have a six-speed and AWD. It would be the first awd 'lude i've ever seen. btw, I hate FWD cars, but I fell in love with the lude. Just wanted to bring her over the top.

Re: AWD in my b20 lude.

Also, to clear this up. There is an AWD civic with a b series engine. My prelude has a b series engine(b20)
I don't want to turn the engine and make the car rwd.
I want to do a drivetrain(tranny, transfer cases etc.) swap from the awd civic to my 'lude.
This would efectivly make my car awd without toooo much fabbing.
The awd rear diff is known to be weak, I want to replace it with a stronger on, preferably a Honda one ie the S2000.
Is everyone on board with me now?
gooood

Re: AWD in my b20 lude.

the transmission and the rear diff are seperate; as i stated before youd need a transfer case if you were to use the S2k transmission(which is the only one with 6spd unless you use the newer evo8 transmission(MR edition i think, even then it might be spinning the opposite direction)); even then the S2k's stock motor is more powerful than the B20 so if you went that route youd be better off sticking with the F20C or F22C.

If you are going to use the civic transmission; then the S2k and dsm rear end wont work because the final drives in the front and back would be different(spinning at different speeds); that is unless you get new custom rear-diff gearset(which you would be doing the same thing if you keep the AWD honda rear differential)

btw; if you were to mate the B20A to the S2K transmission, youll have 6 reverse gears and 1 forward gear...

Also, yes, lots of people dislike the B20A.

Re: AWD in my b20 lude.

GL trying to bolt up the RTAWD Civic tranny to the redheaded step child of b series engines... that's just twice the pain in the ass cuz d and b don't work, and b and f doesn't really fly either... GL though and remember to take plenty of pics for us to see...

Re: AWD in my b20 lude.

You know this would be much easier if you just bough a sixth gen and put it over the frame of a jeep wrangler unlimited. its something like a .2 inch diffrence and you would have all the AWD action you could want!

Re: AWD in my b20 lude.

yes, the "wagovan." Some one thinks I want to mate an s2k's tranny to my b20. That would require lots of fabbing. Im looking to keep the stock transverse engine position of all FWD Hondas. The "wagovan" has a weak rear diff, so I would replace it with something stronger.

There is no 6th gen 'Lude, and I don't want a civic.

Yes the evo's tranny MIGHT work b/c the engine is turned the same way, but why spend all that money When I can use honda parts?

Just go here and scroll down and read everything that has AWD Wagon or AWD listed next to it: http://www.4thgenerationcivic.com/index.html

I want to use the Civic tranny, and just stregthen the rear diff. This way when I nail it, I MOVE, maybe even a little smoke from all 4 tires too.

What is the model and year of the civics that came with this?(ef,dx,etc.)

P.S. I think I threw kevin off whrn I said 6spd, but thats what the website says.
