96 Sls Output Speed Sensor Error

I have an output speed sensor error (confirmed by Cadillac techs). They say $1500 repair (labor and parts). I questioned why so much? The engine and tranny have to be dropped in order to get to this sensor. Can this sensor be changed without dropping engine and tranny?

I'm not sure what tranny model I have, but the engine is a Northstar.

I've priced these sensors, and do believe I can change it out. if I dont have to drop the powertrain.
