'01 Fan not working

Howdy folks -- just ran into this board while trying to find information on a problem.

My fan all of a sudden is no longer working. It started with a groaning from the fan motor and now, I get nothing whether the AC is engaged or not. Same with toggling between in recirculation and vent.

I can tell the AC itself is working as I feel the power change in the engine. The thermostat is also operational as I can feel the temp changes via the ventilated air when the truck is moving.

Just nada, at any setting of the fan speed control knob.

Any ideas? I really do not know what I should look at first. I really hate to have to take it in to a dealer as I am sure that will be spendy.

Welcome to the AF!

If the fan motor made bad noises before you had a problem, odds are, the fan motor died and has to be replaced.

Yup, pretty much figured that was the problem due to the obvious motor dying noise, but I was hoping for something that even I could accomplish, like replacing a fuse.

Now to the next part that I think will be out of my capabilities:

Is this something a novice could handle, or is it going to be a $$$ dealership ordeal?

I didn't figure out if all the pages I gave you were necessary. May only need two.

I see how to go about it now, but am not sure if I can just remove the glove compartment parts or if I have to take out the entire dash, steering wheel, stereo, etc...

If I it just the glove compartment parts, then it looks like a cinch. Looks like the motor itself costs ~$100 so that is good also.

You may be able to locate a used fan at a salvage place for much less. Any decent salvage yard will warranty the item to be good when you receive it.

Thanks Clifton, that is a fantastic idea. I just found a blower motor at Foster's for $40. Used, but great condition.

- Can anyone confirm that the only dash parts removal needed to get to the blower unit is the glovebox and glovebox brace? Looks like 2 screws for the box and 2 for the brace, then 3 for the motor.

I even have the right tools for the job.... a screwdriver.

I guess I really got intimidated by the problem when all I had to do was ask some questions in the right place.
