Unhappy 1998 Malibu

Okay, I have a 98 Malibu LS.. and i just got it 2 days ago, and i realized when i brought it home from the dealer, that the check engine light was on. So i had it checked out and they said my EGR valve was broke and needed to have it replaced. Shortly later i realize my car doesnt start right. It will turn on, but turn off right after it turns on, almost like it doesnt start. It will do this 3-4 times before it really starts. My question is, could this be due to the broken valve?

My advice would be to cancel the sale. In my state if this is a registered auto dealer, you have the right to terminate the deal if the purchaser feels that the dealer has misrepresented the condition of the vehicle. If this is a private sale, you may be stuck.

Cars will not pass the inspection process in my state if the MIL light is on, and thus cannot be knowingly sold, without first resolving any emmission malfuntion, EGR would come under that catagory.

If it were me I'd backout, and threaten litigation.

Only problem is .. i already paid the guy up front with cash. The car was sold "as is" and it was a private dealer. I contacted him telling him the light was on when i left his place he said it was sold as is , and that anything that breaks is my responsiblity.

That's the drawback with going private [as is]. And believe me this person knew full well what with wrong with this car and what it would take to repair it. [Dollars to donuts he had this vehicle put on a scan tool] Call a lawyer to see what indeed your rights are as a buyer in your State. And don'y delay.
