Help, buying a 944 question

Hi-

I'm buying an '83 944 and when i was test driving it, i heard a noise coming from the back, where the diff and i think tranny are. It didnt change from gear to gear, so it's not a tranny thing, and it might be completely harmless and natural, but i've never driven a 944 before so i dont know. so my question is, is it natural to be able to hear a very slight quiet constant whine-type noise coming from the back?

thanks in advance.

Rob

Re: Help, buying a 944 question

i'd put the car on a lift and check the wheel bearings and the cv boots, also look for metal in the gear oil. it sounds like you've got a bad bearing somewhere. a wheel bearing would be much less expensive than a transaxle bearing. try going around corners both directions and see if the sound changes or goes away, if so it probably a wheel bearing, if not it's probably not going to be cheap.

Re: Help, buying a 944 question

I just had a thread on my 83's trans noise. I had taken out all the carpet, sound insulation, etc. After getting my clutch assembly replaced, I heard a whirring sound in all my gears. My axles and bearing are also brand new, but someone told me if the sound is not very loud its not bad. My shop said my final drive is making a little noise and not to be too concerned. It seems like we might be talking about the same thing. Without sound deadening I hear it alot, I'm just not used to it. If it turns out to be major I'll make a post, & vice versa.
