Unhappy Transfer Case 97 Tahoe

I think my transfer case went out on me, but I'm not sure. If you have had one go out please let me know what it sounded like and how much is it to repair? Is it a hard thing to do yourself? When it went out it made the worst noise I have ever heard any vehicle make. It kinda sounded like a spoon in the garbage disposle! I was able to make it a block and it made this really lound winding noise it almost sounded like a siren. Now if I put it in gear it makes a loud awful noise like when you try to shift a stick in gear with out the clutch. Please help! I miss my truck have not drove it in months!

Yeah, I had the same problem and it cost $1200.00 at the dealer and a year later I had to replace it.
