Ford Explorer 4WD Light

The 4WD Hi and Lo lights flash on and off on the dash every two to three minutes. What would be causing this?

The light flashing indicates that the brain, either the pcm, the gem or the four wheel drive module is seeing a problem. It's similar to a check engine light coming on. You didn't indicate a year but if it is a newer body style, then it is probably a module as we've seen a lot of them in the shop recently for the same thing. It's not a guaranteed diagnosis, but it's something to go off of.

Re: Ford Explorer 4WD Light

My 97 started flashing and I took it to Ford and it was a sensor on the transfer case it cast a little over $400, and i think they charged me about $80 to pull the code from the computer.

I have a 99 sport 4wd and at 90k I had that exact problem. I'm pretty sure that you are supposed to have your front and rear differential serviced(fluids replaced) at 90k. I never took it to the shop or anything and the lights quit flashing at exactly 95k. I would have the front and rear diff serviced for about $220-250 and wait to see if it stops flashing at 95k.

Re: Ford Explorer 4WD Light

i have the same problem with my '95 xlt.
the 4wd/4wd lo lights flash 6 times every 5 minutes or so. the power windows won't work whn the lights flash.

sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't?

it started when my stared died and had to be replaced.
