80's RX-7: User Friendly?
Hi,
I'm thinking about getting an 80's RX-7 (Probably a late 80's model) and this would probably be my first real car that I would race with. Do you think it's very novice friendly? If I'm not very good with cars, is this the kind of car that I can use regularly, let it sit in my garage, and expect it to run every time? If not, do you know of any other cars that have this type of body design/body shape that meet my requirements more? Thanks! |

a nissan or old supra would be more suited for your needs if u expect the car to run and run without any major problems

Re: 80's RX-7: User Friendly?
what car do u have now? if your car is FWD, then the RX7 will be harder to control in a wet road since its RWD if you have little or no driving experience i would suggest a civic/integra << require little maintenence and they are great beginer cars. if u want a track car an RX7 would be a good choice because it has a near perfect weight distribution.
If u are sure u want an RX7 i would suggest an 87-91 turbo you could get a good one for about $5K-8K or an 86-91 N/A for about $1.5K- 3K or more depending on mods

Okay, thanks. I was also looking at the late 80's Supras because the body shape is pretty much the same (I like that kind of look). So the Supras are basically cars that I don't have to worry to much about maintenance?
Thanks! |

Re: 80's RX-7: User Friendly?
well, if u break the supra, you'll be able to bring it to a mechanic.
if u break the rotary, you'll have to basicly do the job urself or it will cost u an arm. but for racing purpose, the rx7 is a better car im, its lighter and as capable as a supra is if u look at the power. |

So, the RX-7 is a better racing car but requires more work while the Supra isn't as good but is more reliable?
Any other cars that have this type of look that are REALLY reliable? Thanks! |

a 240sx is reliable, but as far as the drifting fade goes on, you'll pay the car a good price.

Re: 80's RX-7: User Friendly?
its not the good time to buy a japanese rwd late 80-early 90's car, the price are higher than ever because of the drifting fade.
and nissans are in demands more than ever now. it might also be my english that sux, i was born french speaking and the way to put up sentence differs a bit from english, hehehe |

Re: 80's RX-7: User Friendly?
Porsche 944's are very similar in design and are reliable if they are taken care of well. The NA ones can make good power, and the turbos even more soo. They require matinence as dose any other car, but you need to do preventitive matinence.
Volkswagens can be good on the track too. An old golf with a 20V in there.Corrado with a G60 1.8 with a better blower and built block. Older MR2's are great as well, handle like a little go-cart and you can get a sc-ed one. Good luck on your hunt, but if you looking for reliability then an RX7 can work, but it will cost you a pretty penny. Supra turbo is good to, but its a very heavy car to deal with. But can be made into quite a nice little ride.
