Cruise Control

My cruise control quit working could this be a fuse? It was working great and just quit. I have 145000 miles on this trans. and it has slipped ever since I bought the van. I was told that all ford 96 windstar vans had weak trans. Is this true? Would you rebuild it or trade it. Thanks for your help.

Re: Cruise Control

1. Your transmission should NOT slip. You will want to correct that. Try a fluid and filter change. The fluid MUST be changed at LEAST every 30K miles.
The 1996 windstar used Mercon fluid....do not use Mercon V.

2. Cruise control. One cause of problem that has been posted in this forum (I suggest doing a search in this forum on "cruise") is the brake pressure switch, which is located on the bottom of the master cylinder. I just changed mine today....and posted pics....which include the FORD part number.
A container of Motorcraft Brake fluid (to top off fluid when done) and the replacement switch cost me less than $20 at my local Ford dealer.

I have a number of pictures....including that switch replacement at....http://community.webshots.com/album/201931518cScpNK

When I replace the switch do the wires plug in or do I have to splice them into the old wires? Thanks

Re: Cruise Control

The new wiring harness plugs into the new switch...and the old harness connector plugs into the new harness. No splicing needed. The connectors are keyed......
