Rod knock replacment help needed
I have what I believe is a rod starting to knock in a 5.7 engine with 150,000 miles on it. It was pointed out to me 3,000 miles ago with a light ticking sound coming from the bottom middle of the oil pan. For a while I was hoping it was a piston slap but now the ticking sound is getting louder. The oil presser has not drop, still running about 50 psi with 2,500 rpms and 30 psi at 600 rpms. Is their any way to telling if it is a rod for sure and which one with out dropping the oil pan? If it is just one rod what are the chances that I can drop the pan (4x4) and replace just one and not have a bad crank. On a scale of one to ten. Is their a lot of parts to remove to drop the pan in this ½ ton 4x4 suburban? I have a Hanes Manual but it not that great. If it is a rod would the oil pressure drop as the knock got louder? Any ideas or helpful tip would be welcomed. Thanks Dave

Re: Rod knock replacment help needed
I have heard of people useing a wooden baseball bat to find a rod knock. Put your ear to the handel of the bat and the other end up to the cyl. Check each one and see if you can tell. Also your oil pressure should drop off as the knock gets worse. Chances are that if your rod is knocking then you should replace the connecting rod and cap too just swaping out the bearing is not a good idea.
