Having a rebuilt tranny put in my '97 cause...

Alright. If you look back, I have had enough problems with this freak'n Blazer to last me a lifetime, but I still love it. One problem though, I blew the tranny. Well, almost.... I took it to the mechanic, and he said I cracked a shell of somesort inside. I lost 2nd and 4th and Reverse. I was driving only with 1st and 3rd. Also, my torque converter is going to spin a bearing pretty soon, so i have to get that fixed. Its a 97 with 108,000 miles. He said it will be about $1000 to get the two things fixed. Or I could spend $1600, and get a rebuilt put in. He said that it will be under warrenty with him, and if anything goes wrong with it, he will fix it. This sucks.... I have to use my college money to fix it though, which sucks. I will be traveling home on the weekends, once I start school (about an hour and a half on the freeway). I decided to have the rebuilt put it. It will be dependable, and I am sure that it will last, and if it doesn't, he will fix it. This may seem like a really stupid question, but, I had a transmission flush less than 3000 miles ago, and I didn't know if that had to do with my shell cracking. The people who changed the fluid were really stupid where I had it done. I wish I had never gone there now... But i had the thing done that they take every last drop of the fluid out, and completely exchange it. The told me that he does that by blowing the fluid ***backwards*** through the system. He said they don't have to change the tranny filter because it blows the junk backwards out of the filter. Does this have anything to do with the shell cracking? Could they have jammed some junk up into some part blowing it backwards and then it causing stuff to blow? I didn't really trust them when they were doing it (they lost clips to my hoses, and had to go buy brand new ones at the dealership on a Saturday morning. Instead of taking me 1 hour, it took my 4 hours to the that stupid thing done.) If anybody could let me know if the exchange had anything to do with the blow, that would be great. The guy said it had nothing to do with my driving or anything. He said I didn't cause it. Any help would be great. Thanks.

The reaction sun shell breaking is a common problem. It is caused by shifting between reverse and drive without coming to a complete stop.

The guy that did the flush was an idiot the filter should have been replaced when the flush was done...... but it wouldn't have prevented your problem.

This can also be caused by people not allowing the engine to idle down before shifting between park and the gears.

Is your idle high?

It doesn't idle at all. It was running perfect. Everything about the blazer was. There were no sounds, hesitation, or odd handling with it at all. I never shifted gears rough or anything. The tranny guy told me that it was just my luck. Nothing I did or didn't do could have prevented it. All I know is this sucks. I am a senior in high school, trying to put myself through college next year, and this has to happen to me... I am going to be working three jobs just to pay for that alone! But what are ya going to do, you need transportation! Thanks guys for the input. I appreciate your time.
