scanner question

I recently had the intake gasket replaced on my 96 silverado 5.7 vortec. Since it was done, I have had a surging problem when I hit about 2000 rpm. I found out that the distributer may have been put back wrong, and that I would need to have some one with a scanner check the cam timing. The problem is, I don't know what kind of scanner. I went to a car repair place today, and they hooked it up to a scope, but said they couldn't check the cam timing. I will have to do some phoning around, but it would help if I knew the right questions to ask. Any help would be appreciated

Re: scanner question

You need a scanner that can read "Cam Retard".
