1990 Corolla Speaker installation / replacement

I bought new front speakers for a 1990 Corolla and started to install them. The old ones are blown out and sound terrible.

Piece of cake to install them, I figured. They're just speakers, after all.

I removed the speaker panel which is held by clips, then removed the screws holding the grill (metal plate) over the speaker. Only to discover that the grill seems to be held from behind. It looks like I have to remove the entire plastic surrounding the glove box, and do something similar for the driver's side. But before I go dismantling all that stuff, I wanted to ask if anyone knows the right way to do this.

I haven't even started looking at the back speakers yet.

yes, I'd like to know how to do that, too. My speakers are all crap too, they just crackle, and the speakers in the front are totally gone. Barely any sound comes from them.

i owned a 1990 Corolla Coup SR5 for 4 years and completely replaced the entire sound system a few times. for the front passenger side, you must take the entire glovebox out.

You can start by removing the speaker grill and screw(s) behind it (10mm socket). There are at least 2 more 10mm bolts at the very bottom of that part of the dash. There are 2 cross headed screws that hold the latch hook for the glove box, they must be taken out. and at the top of the interior lip of the box there are 2 more cross headed screws. You may find a 1 qubic inch cover that is covering another bolt when you open the box, this also has to be removed. When you pull that part of the dash down, you will see a box with a port hole in it. that is where your speaker is. the box is being held with 3 - 10mm nuts. Remove them and you will have access to the speaker.

The driver side is similar to the passanger side. you will have to remove the entire pannel under the steering colum. There are 2 small pannels hiding golts. to more bolts at the bottom and 1 behind the speaker grill. Again there are 3 nuts holding the speaker box to the back of the main panel that you have to take down.

The rear speakers are a piece of cake. Simply pry off the covers and you'll have access to the speaker.

Front speakers are 4"
Rear Speakers are 5 1/4"

Have fun
