Sensors different for different dash clusters?
My 1988 Cherokee had the bare bones dash cluster and I replaced it with the full dial cluster version, now the oil pressure gauge is going crazy (Maxing out) and the temp gauge never climbs. I called the shop and they say "There are two different sending units depending on what cluster you are using". This sound’s logical is there any truth to this claim? Thanks. |

Re: Sensors different for different dash clusters?
Usually the "senders" for the idiot light setup are simply switches: when the pressure, tempurature or voltage drop below or exceed a preset value, the sender/switch closes completing the circuit to the appropriate dash light which then illuminates. With a gauge setup, you typically need sending units that operate as variable resistors; as the resistance of the sender varies (with increase/decrease in pressure, tempurature or voltage) the voltage through the gauge varies and is displayed via needle movement. I am converting an '85 S10 from a factory basic setup to a full gauge setup. In addition to the sending units, I found I need to rearrange the pin contact setup for the main dash connector plug..... whether this is needed for your Jeep conversion I don't know.

Well you (and the shop) were right, after replacing the sending units with the gauge versions (and they are different looking) everything synced up great.
Fortunately the plug-in in the back was the same configuration, so no problems there. Thanks for the reply. |
