Steering box?

I've been having this problem with my 1990 535i, where the steering is very loose now. The problem surfaced about 15K+ miles ago, and my mechanic adjusted the steering box after I determined that everything in the column was tight, including the large nut at the base of the column in the footwell. His adjustment lasted effectively for about 15K miles, during which time the steering was reasonably tight and precise.

However, it's loosened up to the point where there are nearly 2 inches of play in the steering wheel. When I brought the car back to the mechanic he told me immediately that the steering box could not be adjusted anymore. I figured out how to do it myself, and the feel was improved for about one day--now it has returned to feeling sloppy.

The car has 163,000 miles. It seems odd to me that the box would already be shot. I know that my 1990 Acura Legend never had ANY play in the steering at all (even at 201K)--always light, solid and extremely precise. I've driven four other Legends that are the same way, including my friend's 1991 LS coupe. I also had the pleasure of driving a 1992 Lexus SC 400 recently with 165,000 miles--no play whatsoever. Apparently my 535i uses a recirculating ball system that require adjustment instead of normal rack and pinion, but still...and why?

People I've asked said I'm complaining about a relative nonissue, but for me, being unable to accurately guide what is otherwise a fantastic car is too irritating to live with. If the box truly cannot be adjusted anymore, I assume I am looking at replacement with at least a remanufactured unit costing unknown $$. I have also read that doing this involves removing the engine from its mounts, surely mucho labor $$$$. I'd rather sell the car than undertake that, and a Lexus LS 400 or SC 400 is starting to look like a more reasonable option!

Please, any advice and knowledge would be much appreciated. Sorry for the long post.
