735 Stereo Upgrade

I have a 1989 735iL and I am looking into upgrading the sound system. Althought the stock setup is great, it lacks mid bass presence in the front stage and there is a clear lack of sub bass. My last system had twin 12” JL Audio subs, so I am really missing the deep bass hits.

I want to add something a little better for a tighter sound that still gives good bass response. I would like to hear from anyone that has overhauled their system and give me an idea of what does and doesn’t work well.

In particular, is the factory source unit up to the task of building a bigger system?

I’d appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

Scotty

I have the same exact car and looking to upgrade the stereo as well as all speakers in the near future. The only reference I have found is http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/17939 which upgrades from the stock tape/radio player to BMW cd player, but don't know if it works on our model (although some one did get it to work on an E32 '88 model). Do you have the stock player? or an after market piece. I would be interested in what you have done since I desperately need advice and help

Shawn
