I have a 85 cherokee 4 banger and the same thing happened I pulled
the #2 and it was broken & bent at the electrode, I thought great pieces in the cylinder chamber tried fishing out and nothing came out I even removed the oil pan and checked for metal still nothing put all back togather w/ new plug and did a compression check on all cylinders and had #1 150p.s.i #2 130 p.s.i #3 150 p.s.i #4 150 p.s.i then started motor and sounds like I have a sticky lifter but still runs half way decent. I dont know what to do next, Thinking about doing engine swap to a chevy v6 f.i. any help would be great |

I dropped a washer down the carb one time and it went in the chamber and smashed the spark plug, but I was able to fish it out with a magnet and it ran fine after that. You can take the head off and see if part of the valve is burned off. Recommend you get a later model with the 4.0 liter 6 cyl. engine. It won't fit into your chassis, and the GM 2.8 L that came on that year (85) is TERRIBLE (i HAD ONE). Wimpy too. |

I got no metal pieces at all thats why I removed oil pan. I read somewhere on a post that the chevy v6 3.4l would bolt right up to my 5 speed trans. |

I don't think the 3.4 will fit in the compartment. How about headers, steering clearance, wiring, vacuum controls and clutch linkage issues??? What about the shape of the oil pan where the front part of the 4wd goes. The 4.0 L Jeep is much better, I have two, a 97 4WD 2DR Sport and a 2001 4DR 2Wd Sport that my daughter uses. Got rid of the 84 with GM V-6 engine because it leaked too much. Overhauled it once, cost $2000 because you have to replace the crank to use a one piece seal. |

Now....if you really what something different and you are a good welder and fabricator.....try the light weight Buick V-8 all aluminum engine that Range Rover used. They bought it from GM. Good Luck. |

He is doing a V-6 to V-6 conversion. You have a four banger. Also 3.4L is still smaller than 4.0L (the Jeep engine). If you read the forum, you will find the 4.0L is renown for power and reliablity in the factory form and chassis. So basically, you have to do nothing except find a new (used) Jeep XJ (Cherokee) with a 4.0L engine and 4WD for cheap. I was much impressed at one time when my '79 Corvette got "smoked" by a 4.0L Cherokee. He was probably running a stick while I had the automatic. I recommend the 1997-2001 XJ body because of looks. You should be able to keep this new truck for a long time. |
