79 windshield question

Hey guys, I'm new to the group. My dad and I are restoring a 79 Yellow rubber bumper. We're having some problems with getting the windshield back on. The passenger side doesn't want to line up with the screws, but the drivers side lines up fine. Don't think that the frame for the window is bent, was wondering if anybody else has had the same problem and has a fix or any ideas. Thanks, Colin

Re: 79 windshield question

Colin; Almost everyone who has replaced a windshield has experienced problems getting the bolts in. If you have a new seal it tries to curl back and prevents the frame from going down enough to install the bolts. Some have used duck tape doubled under the rubber seal so it will slide out. After getting several strips under the seal more tape is attached to one end and is pulled tightly over the top of the frame and taped to the other end of the strip. Do all strips the same and you should be able to press down on the top of the fame enough to get the bolts in. Let the heavy guy be the who presses down on the frame. Another way is to lubricate the rubber seal with soapy water and place a sheet of heavy plastic under the seal and gently work the curved seal out with something that will not cut through the plastic and damage the paint while the heavy one is pushing down. Hopefully that will work. Slide the plastic out
before the bolts are tightened. Others have used C clamps on the side rails to pull the frame down. I've never seen that method used but have read about it. It is one of those difficult jobs to do on the MGB. Hope this information helps. Sometimes you have to try several times. Have you tried getting the passenger side bolts in first? Good luck.

Clifton
