Fibre glass over steel mold

Ok... I hammered out what I want as far as side skirts and flares as well as front and rear lower valances. I want to make them out of fibreglass and save the steel as forms for future use. Do I have to smooth out everything and cover them with something to make fibreglass repros? Or can I just cover them with masking tape and fibreglass over them so they will come loose. I know I will have to fit them after making but want to know about the overall smoothness of the steel molds. And the addition of reinforcements. They will be molded into the body sheetmetal,

If you are laying your glass on the outside of the forms getting them absolutely smooth is not necssary. It would be good if they are close but you will be doing a lot of sanding to finish off your hand laid skirts anyway so it really comes down to how much finish work you want to do to the glass parts.
I will recommend NOT molding the glass pieces to the car. Fiberglass and metal do not bond well over time and you will see cracks and separations were the seam is molded in. Fit the parts very carefully and make a nice clean joint. I would much rather see a joint in the long run then stress and separation cracks in a finished car.

Ok ... Thanks I am laying over the top of the steel forms, maybe I dont want to mold them in then, didnt think about cracking over time. What if I temporarily attach the steel to the car with duct tape, or something else, form the glass and let it sit till hard then remove everything and just put the glass back on so it fits good? Then how should I get teh glass to stay at the edges?? drill, rivet and fill over?? or is there a good 2 sided tape that will work and use brackets along the bottom and fender well openings

You've got the idea and a plan... Take your time building the upper attachment flange. Duct tape works great. Use the tape to define your flange as you want to see it on the car and layer the glass right on top of it. You can also build the flange wider and sneak up on the fit by trimming.
3M has some great 2 sided tape that will work perfectly for your skirts. Talk to a body shop or paint supply store. I've even used the stuff you can buy at the hardware with good results but the 3M stuff is used by the O.E.M.s so you can't go to wrong by using it yourself.

Glad to hear that that 2 sided stuff really works, I was thinking I may have to rivet them on and try to cover them with kitty hair bondo.
I did get some sad news about the molds this weekend. See I had another old set I made a couple of years back for a cougar I had, well i asked my son to clean up the garage and throw out stuff we didnt need anymore, he called me at work and asked about the old body kit I had for the cougar, I told him to trash it all, well he trashed it all alright, including the pieces I just made, thankfully the pieces I made for the wheel openings didnt get bent up too bad, but the pieces to connect the 2 together are trash as well as the rear valance thing I made. I cant get mad he did what I told him to do,
