MP4/4 Ayrton Senna (WIP)

My Favourite F1 driver. I only remember watching him race when i was little but i always remember the red and white cars.

i decided to model his 1988 Honda, i got it on sale for 10 bucks. at my LHS.

anyhow so far i got he body cleaned up, and removed the nose cone from the rest of the car.

then painted it Honda bright white, and Honda Bright red, both duplicolor from the can. i seen the car in person and it was red. it was not flouresent yet.

some pics.

the body is not clear coated yet, it is still dull basecoat so it will be brighter after i clear it.

Nice project, will fook forward to watching it progress.
I was under the impression McLaren did use flourescent red back then? Don't really know for sure, when did you see the car in person? Flouro colours can lose their flourescence over time.

My understanding is that the red/orange color is extemely hard to photograph and is a constantly debated subject on www.f1m.com Looks like a great start James. I have the MP4/4 4/7 and 4/8 to build so I will be watching.

The colour used on Marlboro McLarens has been RAL3024 since M23 in 1976. It is fluo red/orange that will look like anything but the correct colour on most printed pictures. Digital is a lot better though. RAL3024 is still used for various highlights on current Macs. The last McLarens to use 'plain post office red' were the M23 in 1974 and 1975. The Texaco Marlboros.

Best regards

Flemming

Not that I don't like your model James but finnaly Formula 1 from you. That will be something good, for sure.
I wouldn't mind about the colour as Mike said no one will ever know the true colour by the photos

Looking forward to this one. I'm guessing that you're planning on using some Marlboro decals here. Do you plan to c/f the car at all?

Re: MP4/4 Ayrton Senna (WIP)

Yup, flouro red it is. I visited the F1 Collection at Donningtoon last year (a must for F1 builders in the UK) which has a good collection of Macs from down the years and it should really be flouro red. It;s absolutelly impossible to photograph accuratelly though!

Still, should be a very nice build, and a good tribute to a great driver who I enjoyed watching immensly.

Hi, nope i'm not using any CF decal, and i will use kit decals on the body.
it's my first modern F1 model so im not going to go crazy on extras lol. it seems nicely detailed from the box.

Re: MP4/4 Ayrton Senna (WIP)

I agree JT, so long as you are happy with the colour that's all that matters. Also a good idea not to use CF decals, since the finish on the monocoque of this era McLaren was quite different to modern CF patterns.
Thanks for the paint code Flemming, will come in handy one day for sure!
Awesome photos Lathafummi, thanks so much for sharing, I hope to make it to see the Donnington collection one day

A great car and a great driver... looks good so far.... Just one thing i have noticed, the headrest pad behind the drivers head should only be on the Prost version not the Senna version
