Re: ? run flat tires for 20's on up?

You may have a misconception about run flat tires.

Run flat tires are designed to be operated for a short distance and a reduced speed without inflation pressure. This allows the owner who gets a PUNCTURE to get to a tire dealer to deal with the situation. As a general rule, the tire must be replaced if it is operated in the "runflat" mode.

Run flat tires are NOT designed to be better for impact resistance and therefore, wouldn't be of benefit if you suffer impact damage due to poor roads. More likely, the damage to the tire would spread (as it would with any tire), rendering the vehicle immoble fairly quickly, unless you want to drive on the rims.

Hope this helps.

I had run flats on my camaro for about 2 years before I got rid of the car. They once got me to work on time one day when I came out in the morning and discovered a flat. They’re a little rougher ride then other tires because of the extra thick sidewalls, so it may not be such a great idea for those messed up Dallas streets of yours. Other than that they’re a nifty idea, and I always wondered why they never caught on with the public or the manufactures . Maybe new technology coming out or something, who knows.

On a side note, I read somewhere that many of the private security firms in Iraq use them it their big white GMCs because they give the vehicle a little extra time to get out of the kill-zone if the tires are shot out.
