transmission

I im having some problems with my 2001 cavalier 2.2L and i have a powertrain warrenty i just wanted to know if there are some common symptons for problems in either the tranny or the engine...
right now when i drive everyonce in a while when im picking up speed for a split second it feels like it kicks out..almost like i slightly pressed the brakes and let go...wether its the engine or tranny i just dont want to take it to the dealership and have to pay for nothing but them looking at it...another thing is...my engine is making a slight ticking noise..it WAS only when the engine was cold but now its carrying over to where it happens even when its warm..i just recently got an oil change and they told me that either the idler or the alternator bearing might be worn.
could this cause the noise alone or would there have to be something else along with that.

im hoping that maybe the crank or the oil job that was just done on my car causes the engine to seize cuz this way i could get my current 120,000 kilometer engine replaced with a brand new one lol
but i doubt that'll happen

but if anyone could tell me some of the problems that could result in a major repair job and their symptoms plz let me know
